Students at Shaw Butte Elementary celebrate their efforts with an ice cream party.
What's better than ice cream in Arizona? Nothing, really. Just ask students at Shaw Butte Elementary — they'll be treated to an ice cream party at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2nd, for collecting the most food during the second Washington Elementary School District's We Can End Hunger Food Drive. The school is located at 12202 N 21st Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85029.
During two weeks in February, all 32 schools in the Washington Elementary School District held a variety of events, activities and games to collect food benefiting the Desert Mission Food Bank, part of the John C. Lincoln Health Network. The We Can End Hunger Food Drive collected a total of 56,382 pounds of food, with Shaw Butte contributing 13,382 pounds to the effort. This drive is one of the largest benefitting Desert Mission Food Bank and over a 100% increase in the WESD food drive last year.
Shaw Butte Elementary will also receive the 2nd Annual We Can End Hunger trophy.
"This is an incredible accomplishment," said Mallory Lebovitz, Development Manager for Desert Mission. "One in four children in Arizona goes to bed hungry, many of them within the Washington Elementary School District. We are incredibly proud of, and thankful to, these students. They're doing a world of good."
