Free Breast Health Expo Spotlights the Future of Breast Cancer Technology: 3-D Imaging

The latest research, diagnostic procedures, treatments and support services available to breast cancer patients and their families will be presented June 30 at a Breast Health and Wellness Expo. Tailored to women, the event is hosted by The Wellness Community and the John C. Lincoln Breast Health and Research Center.

The free expo, open to the public, runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton Phoenix North at MetroCenter, 10220 North Metro Parkway East, Phoenix.

Presentations will be given by:

  • Heather Cunliffe, PhD, head of the T-Gen Breast - Ovarian Cancer Research Unit.
  • Lise C. Walker, MD, breast surgeon on staff at John C. Lincoln Hospitals.
  • Albert Andres, MD, reconstructive surgeon on staff at John C. Lincoln Hospitals.
  • Sherry Gage, RTRM and Linda Greer, MD, Breast Health and Research Center.

A question-and-answer session will follow, allowing the audience to pose questions to presenters.

The free program will highlight the newest screening and diagnostic technology — 3-D mammography — now available at John C. Lincoln's Breast Center, the second facility in the U.S. to offer this service.

The 3-D system produces images of thin layers of breast tissue in unprecedented detail that not only enables doctors to save lives by detecting breast cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage, but also eliminates "recalls" by giving doctors confidence to rule cancer out.

This is important for 65 percent of women who have dense breast tissue and whose 2-D digital mammograms required follow-up testing to investigate abnormalities, most of which proved to be noncancerous. Such recalls increased costs and imposed considerable stress and uncertainty on the women affected.
