The American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation has granted National Program Certification to the outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital.
Cardiac rehabilitation is a secondary prevention program for patients with heart disease. The multidisciplinary approach utilizes the expertise of the entire cardiopulmonary rehab team.
Monitored classes are scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and are open to patients referred by cardiologists or primary care physicians following heart attacks or other cardiac health problems.
The certification, which recognizes the high quality of the program, can be renewed at the end of two years, according to Lynn Moreno, MPA, director of Operations for Health Management Services, where the program is housed.
"Achievement of this elite certification is due to the teamwork, dedication heart and spirit of my awesome A-Team!" Moreno said.
Certification was earned following four months — or three years, depending how you count — of focused effort by the members of the cardiac rehab team, Moreno said. "When I was given responsibility for cardiac rehab in 2006, certification became our goal. We took an in-depth look at the requirements and started working to improve our policies and procedures so we could qualify."
A huge step forward was accomplished, she said, when cardiologist Gary Kauffman, MD, agreed to become medical director for the cardiac rehab program. Other changes included enhancement of the major components of the program. Patients are taught how to modify their risk factors and adopt a more healthy lifestyle.
The actual application took four months to assemble, Moreno said. "Clearly, the application process helped enhance our program and cemented our team." she said. "That's reflected in the growing success of cardiac rehabilitation. In 2008 we saw record numbers of patients and streamlined the program to operate at maximum efficiency. We have tripled the size of the program and continue to break records in 2009."
The cardiac rehab program team includes Jeanne Flanagan, RN, clinical supervisor; Dianna Scaccia, MS, exercise physiologist; Linda Propper, RN; Janice Carden, RN; Julie Reynolds, office supervisor; Leonary Tsinnie, monitor tech; Joy VanWieren, administrative secretary; and Lisa Galan, client services representative.
