John C. Lincoln Hospitals is teaming up with Glendale Fire Department and Vineyard Church North Phoenix to save young lives by hosting a community car seat inspection event from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 21.
"More than 80 percent of car seats in America are installed improperly," said Lori Moxon, RN, John C. Lincoln Trauma Services injury prevention coordinator.
"Motor vehicle accidents are the number one killer of children under the age of 14," she added. "Car seat safety is an easy educational tool for the community to decrease the number of children killed in motor vehicle crashes."
Parents, caregivers and their children are invited to attend the event at the Vineyard Church North Phoenix, 6250 W. Peoria Ave., Glendale.
John C. Lincoln has invested in certifying medical staff on both hospital campuses as car seat technicians, and they will be on site the day of the event. A certified car seat technician is one who has completed a series of in-depth classes and several hours of practice training through the National Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Certification Training Program. The program has certified tens of thousands of individuals since the program began in 1997.
Each inspection takes approximately 20 minutes and includes:
- Assisting with the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.
- Explaining the most acceptable way to transport a child safely.
- Inspecting the child safety seat.
- Answering questions.
"Since the establishment of car seat inspections, more than 9,000 children's lives have been saved," said Moxon.
In addition to the inspections, John C. Lincoln staff members also will have a recall list of car seats on hand to ensure the car seat an individual is using is not on the recall list.
If a car seat is on the recall list, John C. Lincoln will provide a replacement seat at no charge. If replacements seats are no longer available, a list of community resources that offer child safety seats will be given.
Fun Family Activities
Other activities at the event include:
- Mendy, RN, the spokesdog and mascot at Mendy's Place, John C. Lincoln's 24/7 Pediatric Emergency Center at its Deer Valley Hospital, will be present for photo opportunities, to sign autographs and give away child-friendly items.
- Glendale Fire Truck tours and summer safety awareness education.
- A raffle for a chance to win a free car seat.
The public is encouraged to arrive early and bring their owner's manuals for both their vehicle and child safety seat to the event. Those who are unable to attend the event can visit JCL.com/mendysplace for more information on car seat safety or to schedule an individual car seat inspection by one of John C. Lincoln's staff technicians.
