John C. Lincoln's Breast Health and Research Center in north Phoenix has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the national professional organization for physicians who specialize in medical imaging.

Only 633 of the nation's 8,600 breast imaging centers have earned designation as Centers of Excellence. John C. Lincoln's Breast Center is just the ninth in Arizona so honored.

"Earning the designation as a Center of Excellence demonstrates serious commitment to quality and safety," explained ACR spokesman Will Creech.

By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College's voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

The breast imaging services at John C. Lincoln's breast Center are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.

Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

"Designation as a Center of Excellence shows the facility has met standards that are rigorous and include earning accreditations that are voluntary as well as mandatory," Creech said. "Centers that have undergone this kind of scrutiny and successfully exceeded the standards are exemplars to the rest of the country."

"We are thrilled to earn this designation," said Breast Center Director Sherry Gage, RTRM. "It shows that experts have recognized our continuing commitment to the best possible patient care."
