Caring For Children

As a children's emergency center located at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital, Mendy's Place cares for our youngest patients.

Mendy's Place is staffed with pediatric specialists who are experts in caring for children of all ages, from infants to teenagers. Also on staff is a child life specialist, who helps children and their families prepare for hospital stays and medical procedures.

Ready to treat a wide variety of injuries and illnesses, our Children's Emergency Center features child-size medical equipment and furniture, along with brightly colored décor that showcases mascot Mendy, a friendly dog and RN.

A spacious waiting area — with cheerful murals and a life-sized three-dimensional tree — warmly welcomes patients when they arrive. Each of the 12 private rooms in Mendy's Place has a different animal theme.

When drawing blood or other procedures are necessary, VeinViewer, or Wee Lights, helps out. Using noninvasive technology to show the veins under the skin, most procedures — including drawing blood or starting IVs — often can be performed in one gentle poke.

At Mendy's Place, children are given complete medical and emotional support in a family-centered environment. Parents, too, take comfort knowing that our dedicated staff is ready to provide the specialized care that children deserve.

In addition to medical and nursing expertise, our pediatric services are designed to take the "scary" out of a hospital experience by providing the latest technology and medical equipment specifically designed for younger patients.

Our staff provides care for a broad spectrum of childhood illnesses, injuries and conditions, including:

  • Abdominal pain

Remember, if your child is experiencing a life-threatening illness or injury, call 911.

Pediatric Radiology Services

Our pediatric-trained nurses and technologists provide radiology services specifically for pediatric patients. X-ray technology not only uses one-third less radiation, but also requires fewer images to diagnose and treat children. Kid-friendly decorations in the upgraded pediatric X-ray suite make the medical imaging process much easier for both children and their parents.

Our Child Life Specialist will be on hand to answer your questions and provide support to your child. Pediatric Radiology appointments can be made at any time by calling the central scheduling number at 602-943-4269.

We also invite you to see our medical imaging videos designed just for younger patients, which explains procedures such as CT scans, MRI, ultrasound and X-rays.

Pre-Operative Tours Are Available

Hospital experiences can be overwhelming and frightening for people of all ages, and surgery can be especially worrisome for children as well as parents.

Pre-operative tours can help relieve that anxiety. Our child life specialist is available to conduct pre-operative ours to children and families that includes trips to different surgical areas, age-appropriate education and medical play.

Familiarizing children with the sights, sounds and smells of the hospital prior to surgery reduces the fears of the unknown. Pre-operative tours offer a reassuring and non-threatening way to learn about what to expect for surgery or a procedure.

To schedule a pre-operative tour or to learn more about talking to your child about surgery, call our Child Life Specialist at 602-879-1656.
