As the following total knee replacement video shows, complete knee joint replacement involves removal of damaged cartilage and surrounding bone, then replacing those structures with components made of metal, plastic or ceramic materials.
Specifically, cartilage covering the femur (thigh bone), tibia (lower leg bone) and patella (kneecap) are removed, along with nearby bone spurs and degenerated bone. Knee joint replacement components are cemented into place at the top of the tibia, the base of the femur and in the patella.
