Based on standards established by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, cardiac rehab provides cardiac risk factor recognition and reduction, educational care plans, medication compliance, and emotional support in meeting the daily challenges of living with cardiovascular disease in addition to medically monitored exercise therapy.

Cardiac rehab has three phases and is offered at both John C. Lincoln Hospitals. Our cardiac rehab team consists of registered nurses, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, medical social workers and other health professionals necessary to meet patients' individual needs. Championed by cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons on staff, our facilities provide state-of-the-art monitoring and exercise equipment.

Cardiac Rehab Phase 1: During Hospitalization

Cardiac rehab starts in the hospital with an aggressive program that begins as soon as the patient is able to participate. Because muscles can lose their strength quickly if they're not used, it's important to get moving as soon as possible. A nurse or patient care technician accompanies the patient on short walks, which builds strength as well as prevents lung problems and pneumonia. Patients also receive education on how to begin their recovery process.

Cardiac Rehab Phase 2: After Hospitalization

Phase 2 is a medically monitored 4-12 week outpatient program, and is designed to restore and maintain a healthy heart. Phase 2 requires a cardiologist prescription to participate. Phase 2 is covered by Medicare and most private health insurance plans.

Cardiac Rehab Phase 3: Maintenance

Preserving and protecting heart health is the goal during Phase 3. This is a health maintenance and self-improvement program for motivated patients. A physician’s prescription is required to participate. This program is not covered by insurance and there is a minimal fee to participate. It offers a one-hour aerobic-based workout session three times a week.
