When the artificial joint components once implanted by total hip replacement begin to wear down and become detached from the surface of the bone, a revision hip replacement may be required.

In revision hip replacement surgery, worn hip joint components are replaced with new components. Highly specialized techniques are used to remove the failed implant, along with surrounding scar tissue and abnormal bone tissue. Bone graft and cement may be used to rebuild the hip joint, depending on the severity of damage sustained by the hip joint.

Hip revision replacement can be a complex procedure. How it is performed, exactly, may depend upon the overall health of the patient and reasons why the original, implanted joint failed.
