Overview
The Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (PCCU) specializes in the care of cardiac patients, particularly post-open heart surgery patients, patients with new myocardial infarctions, catheterization patients, post-intervention patients, titrating drips and stable ventilator patients.
Unit Size
The PCCU is a 30-bed, all-private-room unit.
Scheduling & Shifts
Scheduling in the PCCU is flexible, allowing RNs to self-schedule. The 12-hour shifts are from 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. and from 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 a.m.
Clinical Support
RNs in the 30-bed PCCU enjoy a 4-to-1 nurse to patient ratio, and have ancillary assistance with a charge nurse on each shift, an admitting nurse, unit-based clinical educator and a cardiac rehab nurse who focuses on patient education for post open heart and MI patients. Also stationed on the unit is a monitor tech, a unit secretary, PCTs, unit-based case managers, medical social workers and a unit based pharmacist. On day shifts, there is a transport team that takes patients to procedures and a 24-hour rapid response team is also available to assist.
Unit Design
Instead of inheriting workspaces that didn't meet the needs of the staff, nurses worked along-side architects to design the critical care nursing units, including the beautiful, new Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (PCCU), located on the third floor of Pavilion 2.
