John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital Creates Ideal Place for Phoenix Orthopedics Care
2/23/2009

The new Orthopedic Unit at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital blends state-of-the-art technology and treatment with a comfortable environment designed specifically for patients recovering from orthopedic-related surgeries and injuries.

The new 30-bed, 25,000-square-foot Phoenix orthopedics unit opened in mid-January at the hospital at I-17 and Loop 101. It was designed with input from the CORE Institute, the Center for Orthopedic Research and Education, to create the ideal place for Phoenix orthopedics care.

"The new Orthopedic Unit at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital will prove to be the nicest unit of its kind in Phoenix," said M. Wade Shrader, MD, and vice chairman of the CORE Institute. "While the state-of-the-art architecture is impressive, the top-notch nursing staff is truly the jewel of the floor."

John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital's new Phoenix orthopedics unit features hotel-like touches, including beds with low-pressure mattresses, designed for patient comfort.

Aesthetics are important, particularly for elective procedures, added Jason Scalise, MD, a CORE physician who specializes in reconstructive and arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

"When you know you will be in the hospital for few days, you want it to be as pleasant as possible," he said.

The fellowship-trained Phoenix orthopedic surgeons have specialties in sports medicine and arthroscopy; joint replacement for hips, knees, shoulders, elbows and ankles; hip resurfacing; and other innovative techniques.

Vickie De La Toba of Phoenix, recovering recently from hip surgery at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital, praised the new unit.

"The rooms are large and pretty. The artwork is lovely. It’s just so calming and relaxing in here," she said. "It's just beautiful."

Her family can fit in the room when they visit, and the small couch pulls out into a bed, if someone needed to stay the night.

The nice surroundings are topped off with a well-trained and compassionate staff.

"I can't tell you how comforting it is to know they really care," she said.

Susan Hoffmeister, RN, BSN, clinical director for Deer Valley Orthopedics, said patients will benefit from these features:

  • All patient rooms are large and private with a window.
  • Half the rooms are equipped with patient lifts so that patients can be more easily and comfortably transferred in and out of bed.
  • The décor includes wood-laminate floors, a serene color and lighting scheme, and artwork. The Phoenix orthopedics unit projects more of a feeling of a hotel than a hospital; yet all patient safety devices and equipment in the rooms are state of the art and capable of accommodating patients of all sizes.
  • The Rehabilitation Department is conveniently located in the unit for physical therapy, and the gym has large windows.
  • The patient-to-staff ratio is five to one.
  • All beds have low-pressure mattresses designed for comfort and to reduce pressure points to maintain skin health.
