Career Development Programs
Our nurses are busy caring for patients, and we help care for our nurses' careers through a number of education and professional development programs.
Growth, Advancement and Investment in Nursing (GAIN)
GAIN was established to help nurses explore new career paths and advance their careers with our organization. The program encourages learning and professional development by offering nurses a choice of career tracks and work assignments. Fellowship nursing positions are available to those with a BSN in five areas:
- Education
- Quality/Risk Management
- Patient Care
- Management/Leadership
- Clinical Information Systems
Each fellowship position allows for one shift per pay period to work on special projects connected to the career track selected. The nurse gains experience and expertise that create opportunities to advance to higher level positions.
GAIN is the result of a collaboration between the Human Resources department and a team of nurses from both of our hospitals.
Student Nurse Advancement Program (SNAP)
Student Nurse Advancement Program (SNAP) is a program for students enrolled in a nursing degree program. Through SNAP, nursing students can gain clinical experience while earning a salary, work flexible schedules allowing them to attend school, receive tuition assistance and get insurance for themselves and their families. SNAP employees start as a Student Nurse Tech I , then advance to a Student Nurse Tech II, then to a Nurse Extern, and finally a Nurse Intern in the last semester or block of school. Each level offers increased opportunities to learn new skills, and students receive a salary increase with each level.

College Nursing Programs
We are taking innovative steps to ensure nurses have continued opportunities for career development and growth through College Nursing Programs. Qualified RNs can grow through our RN to BSN partnership with Grand Canyon University, and pursue a graduate degree through our partnership with Arizona State University. Eligible employees who want to become nurses can participate in a collaborative program with Maricopa Community College to receive their Associate degree. There are also faculty opportunities for our nurses through all three programs.
RN Refresher Course
John C. Lincoln Hospitals developed an RN Refresher Course (approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing) targeted at nurses who have been away from active hospital bedside nursing for no longer than ten (10) years. When offered, specific requirements and application information are listed in the Just for Nurses section of our Web site.
Specialty Training Courses
If you would like to expand your training to include specialty areas, we offer on-site courses in areas such as CCU, ED, Telemetry and OR. These courses count toward Contact Hours and help prepare you to sit for the credentialing exams.
Center for Advancing Nursing (CAN)
CAN was designed to support our nurses in their professional development and nursing research. Nurses can apply for funding from CAN (up to $850 a year) to attend relevant professional conferences to continue to enhance their clinical knowledge, core skills, and growth.
Clinical Nurse Educators
Clinical Nurse Educators are a critical part of nursing education at our hospitals. They hold a master’s degree or are in pursuit of their master’s. They teach classes and workshops; orient and train staff; offer precepting, mentoring and facilitating assistance; and make available CEU-eligible programs.
Annual Nursing Leadership Retreat
Each year, our nursing leaders, charge nurses and those serving on Shared Leadership Councils gather for a day of professional development and growth. During this retreat, nurses participate in self-evaluation, learn about leadership styles, hear guest speakers and enjoy a wide variety of team-building activities. The retreat is provided at no cost to participants.
