Academic and Social Activities
You will not be lonely during your residency. Active participation during academic and social activities is encouraged for all 12 residents (first, second and third year) within the program. These activities are a forum for learning about patients and medical topics, as well as each other.
- Journal Club: Residents meet to critically evaluate recent articles in medical literature; usually held at a restaurant and mediated by a thought leader.
- Conferences: Residents regularly attend local and national conferences.
- Spring "Post-Match" Party: After each year’s matches are completed, incoming students are hosted by the program and current residents to provide an opportunity to be introduced in a relaxing setting, away from the hospital and clinic.
- Fall Bar-B-Q: Our program director hosts a barbecue for residents, their families and prospective medical students interested in the program each fall.
- Resident Social: A family medicine city-wide resident social activity, such as a softball or bowling competition, is hosted each year by the Arizona Association of Family Practitioners (AzAFP).
- Resident Retreat: Residents retreat to destinations such as Laughlin, NV or Flagstaff, AZ for team-building and relaxation.
