In January 2008, the Intensive Care Unit at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital became the first in Arizona honored with the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the largest specialty nursing organization in the world.
Critical care units that receive the Beacon Award exhibit high quality standards in six categories:
- Innovation and excellence in recruitment and retention
- Education, training and mentoring
- Evidence-based practice and research
- Patient outcomes
- Creating and promoting healing environments
- Leadership and organizational ethics
The AACN has awarded the Beacon to an elite group of just over 100 critical care units, out of 6,000-plus in the nation.

For the second year in a row—and the third time overall—John C. Lincoln Health Network has ranked among the Best Places to Work in the Valley of the Sun, according to The Business Journal and Best Companies AZ.
The Network has earned its ranking because of its positive, productive work environment, which retains valued employees. Winners were selected through an independent survey of employees at companies across the Valley.
In 2006, John C. Lincoln was ranked the top hospital employer in Phoenix and the 7th top employer among the Valley’s large companies. The Network placed 15th among the largest Valley employers in 2003, the competition's inaugural year.

John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital was accredited as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Through its stroke care program, the hospital has demonstrated that it follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.
Primary Stroke Center status is based on submitted documentation and an unannounced site visit by JCAHO surveyors, who check the hospital’s compliance in 10 designated areas, including:
- Consideration of clot-busting medication
- Appropriate administration of anti-thrombotics like aspirin or Plavix
- Diagnosing atrial fibrillation, an independent risk factor for stroke
- Prescribing anticoagulants like Coumadin at time of patient discharge from the hospital
- Deep-vein blood clot prevention with mobilization, compression hose and/or medication and patient education

The National Society of Chest Pain Centers named John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital an Accredited Chest Pain Center.
The important designation reflects the hospital's commitment to reducing the time it takes to treat patients who are experiencing heart-attack symptoms.
To earn accreditation status, a facility must demonstrate expertise in eight strict criteria. Factors include: effective integration with the local emergency medical system; ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients with symptoms of acute coronary syndrome (ACS); process improvement; and outreach programs.
Each facility also must undergo on-site evaluation by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

Mendy’s Place, the North Valley’s only children’s emergency center, earned a 2006 Showcase in Excellence Award from the Arizona Quality Alliance.
A part of John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital, Mendy’s Place was selected based on the improvements made in how care is delivered to its young patients.
As a result of the changes, Mendy’s Place has achieved patient satisfaction scores that rank in the nation’s top 1 percent. In addition, staff satisfaction has improved.

The Respiratory Care department at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital was named the state's Respiratory Care Department of the Year. The award, granted by the Arizona Society for Respiratory Care, is given to a department that demonstrates great team work, dedication and commitment to excellence in the field of respiratory care.

John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital received the Arizona Nurses Association Employer Excellence Award. Employers were judged on criteria including:
• Promotes the image of nurses and nursing
• Promotes professional autonomy through internal structures which enhance nursing input into decisions and operational policy formation
• Supports nurses and nursing by providing equitable mechanisms for delivery of nursing care
• Recognizes those nurses who pursue excellence through education and/or certification
• Encourages nurses’ involvement in professional organizations
• Promotes collaboration and collegiality among professionals
• Demonstrates a willingness to try innovative approaches to patient care delivery
• Demonstrates support for and promotion of nursing research
• Leads the community in salary and benefits for nurses
In addition, judges also considered whether the employers:
- Maintain a positive working relationship with Health Care Reporter Excellence
- Portray nurses as competent, knowledgeable health care providers
- Identify the unique contributions of nurses in the provision of health care
- Present health-related issues as having multiple dimensions and nurses as key players in the issue
- Utilize nurses’ expertise when preparing articles
- Maintain a positive relationship with AzNA.

John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital ranked 39th among America’s 6,007 medical centers in treating respiratory disorders, according to U.S. News and World Report’s guide to “Best Hospitals 2005.”
According to U.S. News, the North Mountain hospital is part of “an elite group.” Only 176 of the nation’s hospitals scored well enough to rank in any of the 17 medical specialties listed this year.

John C. Lincoln nurses received the highest national designation for excellence in patient care when John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital was granted “Magnet” status.
The American Nurses Association awarded the designation, which places the hospital among the nation’s top 3 percent of hospitals for nursing care. All Magnet hospitals must earn the status by meeting 14 rigorous standards shown to improve patient care and outcomes.
The term "Magnet" became associated with the designation when it was discovered that hospitals meeting the Magnet standards had the ability to “attract” and retain the most qualified nurses, even as the quality of health care is endangered by a national nursing shortage.

John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital was one of just 150 American hospitals honored for organ donation by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Only hospitals that achieved a 75 percent or greater organ donation rate for 12 consecutive months received the National Medal of Honor.
In Arizona alone, more than 1,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Across the country, 17 people die each day while waiting for an organ.
Medal of Honor presentations are part of a nationwide initiative by HHS to increase communication regarding organ donations. Organ donations increased 11 percent in 2004 due, in part, to a series of conferences for Intensive Care Unit personnel that focused on talking with families in crisis.

John C. Lincoln Health Network was honored for their honesty as one of the 2004 winners of the Better Business Bureau of Central/Northern Arizona’s Ethics Award.
Winners were chosen in six categories based on size and location of the business. The bureau and its foundation established the BBB Business Ethics Awards to recognize firms that demonstrate high standards of ethical business conduct and practices, both internally and externally.

The Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: Benchmark’s for Success program has set the standard for hospital performance by identifying the top achievers in the industry using a national comparative balanced-scorecard approach. This National Benchmarks for Success study identifies industry benchmarks and recognizes hospitals that demonstrate superior clinical, operational and financial performance in overall service.
Thomson (formerly Solucient) maintains the nation’s largest health care database comprised of more than 22.6 million discharges per year from 2,900 hospitals, representing 77.5 percent of all discharges. The company provides information resources to more than 3,000 hospitals in the United States.

For its ambitious and far-reaching efforts to improve the health and well-being of people throughout its service area, John C. Lincoln Health Network was selected as the recipient of one of the health care field’s most prestigious honors: the Foster G. McGaw Prize for excellence in community service.
The Foster G. McGaw prize, first awarded in 1986, recognizes organizations that demonstrate commitment to community service through a range of innovative programs that expand access to care. The prize inspires hospitals, health systems and communities to assess and implement programs that improve their communities.
The $100,000 award is named in honor of entrepreneur and philanthropist Foster G. McGaw, who founded the American Hospital Supply Corporation. Mr. McGaw died in 1986, and the award was created that year. It is sponsored by the American Hospital Association, the Baxter International Foundation and the Cardinal Health Foundation.

John C. Lincoln’s Marley House was recognized for its outstanding contribution and long-term commitment to prevention of child abuse and neglect by the Greater Phoenix Child Abuse Prevention Council.
Marley House opened its doors in 1996 to offer families in Sunnyslope information about and referral to local resources and services, and to provide support to families during times of stress.
The effectiveness in preventing child abuse and neglect by offering tangible assistance and support to families is evidenced by rates of child abuse and neglect among families who participated in Marley House services.

John C. Lincoln Health Network and its Desert Mission Food Bank were named the recipient of the City of Phoenix’s Mayor’s Youth and Partnership Award for its collaborations in the areas of leadership, mentoring and innovation with the 4th grade science class at Hidden Hills Elementary School.
Sponsored by the Phoenix Youth and Education Commission, KTVK NewsChannel 3 and know99 Television, the award is given annually to a local business or community group for improving the educational opportunities with Phoenix youth.

John C. Lincoln Health Network was named Community Partner of the Year by Goodwill Industries of Central Arizona for enhancing the quality of life for those in and around the Sunnyslope area.
In 2002, through their Community Development Department, John C. Lincoln was vital in the implementation of Goodwill’s America’s Promise Grant. Under this grant, Goodwill assisted the Sunnyslope community to become a Community of Promise by building the character and competence of our nation’s youth.
To promote this promise, a Promise Station had to be established and maintained for the community. John C. Lincoln’s Community Development Department accepted the lead role and a Promise Station would be under their guidance.
John C. Lincoln was also vital in the employment of 250 youth in the summer of 2002 through the Governor’s Action Communities Initiative Grant operated by Goodwill. Youth who live in the Sunnyslope area were able to take with them employable skills they obtained through the program, as well as earn money for clothes and school supplies.

This award was presented to John C. Lincoln Health Network for excellence in safety. Given annually by the Arizona Chapter of the National Safety Council, it honors an individual, group, industry, association or government agency for excellence in injury prevention.
The award was collectively earned by every co-worker throughout the entire network for participating in the safety process, making John C. Lincoln Health Network one of the safest providers of health care and related services in Arizona.
